Description

Overview:

  • The Special Educator is responsible for providing individualized instruction and support to students with special needs, ensuring they have access to a quality education that meets their unique learning requirements. 
  • They collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to develop and implement personalized education plans tailored to each student's needs.

    Responsibilities:
  • Assessment and Evaluation: Conduct assessments to identify students' strengths, weaknesses, and specific learning needs. Use various tools and methods to evaluate students' academic, social, emotional, and behavioural development.
  • Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Development: Collaborate with the IEP team to develop, review, and revise individualized education plans for students with special needs. Ensure that IEP goals are measurable, achievable, and aligned with state standards.
  • Instructional Planning and Delivery: Develop and implement instructional strategies and accommodations to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities. Modify curriculum materials and teaching techniques to support students' learning styles and abilities.
  • Classroom Support: Provide direct instruction, small group instruction, or one-on-one support to students with disabilities in inclusive or self-contained classroom settings. Assist classroom teachers in adapting lessons, managing behavior, and fostering a positive learning environment for all students.
  • Progress Monitoring: Regularly monitor students' progress towards IEP goals and objectives. Collect and analyze data to track student performance, identify areas of growth, and make data-driven decisions about instructional practices and interventions.
  • Collaboration and Consultation: Collaborate with teachers, support staff, parents, and outside agencies to coordinate services and support for students with special needs. Provide guidance and consultation to classroom teachers on effective instructional strategies, behaviour management techniques, and accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Parent Communication: Maintain open and ongoing communication with parents/guardians regarding students' progress, challenges, and achievements. Attend IEP meetings, parent conferences, and other meetings as needed to discuss students' educational needs and goals.
  • Professional Development: Stay informed about current research, best practices, and legal requirements in special education. Participate in professional development activities, workshops, and training opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills in the field of special education.
    Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • State certification/licensure in Special Education.
  • Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Experience working with students with a range of disabilities and diverse learning needs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, parents, and other stakeholders.
  • Patience, empathy, and a passion for working with students with special needs.
