Senior Lab Technician (Hematology Department)

Responsibilities are as follows:

1. Arrival of technical staff in department at 8.00 am.

2. Switching on the hematology analyzers and performing the daily maintenance and recording in dedicated files.

3. Running of daily QCs according to standard operative procedures:

• Internal QC samples
• Retesting of retained samples
• Replicate testing
• Auto-manual comparison
• Inter-instrument comparison

1. After samples are received, they are segregated as per test ordered against the barcode.

2. Samples are then run in respective analyzers and results either interfaced/manually transcribed in the LIS.

3. CBC results are scanned for individual parameters and any abnormal result is entered in dedicated register against barcode. Peripheral smears of all these cases are prepared for manual review by the consultants.

4. Low Hemoglobin, Platelet Count, TLC and High TLC and Coagulation results are rechecked in back up analyzers.

5. Negative blood groups are confirmed by du test. (all blood groups are rechecked by two methods- gel card and slide method).

6. After manual slide examination results are manually transcribed in the LIS.

7. Abnormal- high and low values are correlated with other biochemical and clinical parameters.

8. Daily one ESR value is correlated with manual westergren method. Weekly one reticulocyte count is manually rechecked on slide.

9. Since platelet poor plasma is required for coagulation test, daily one coagulation sample is randomly checked for platelet count.

10. during verification of results in LIS by consultants following things are ensured.

• Critical alert values are entered in registers and informed by technical staffs to the patient kin within half an hour of approval of results. a similar entry is made in the software.
• TAT monitoring is done to ensure results are released within 3 hours of sample received by the laboratory.

11. Maintenance of stock in stock register and intimating the inventory when stock exhaustion is imminent.

12. All kit literatures are preserved in respective files with entry of date of opening and date of expiry. Similar entries are made on the reagent vials and containers.

13. In case of any machine breakdown service engineer of respective analyzer is informed through standard protocol. An entry of break down and restart of analyzer is recored in instrument file.

14. Service report is properly filed. Preventive maintenance (6 monthly) and calibration (yearly) of auto analyzers done by the company personnel and documents are maintained.

15. Test done marking for all manual tests.
