Description

Prepare and set up the operating room before surgical procedures, ensuring all necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies are available and properly sterilized.
Maintain a sterile field in the operating room by following aseptic principles and practices, including scrubbing, gowning, and gloving, and monitoring adherence to sterile technique by all members of the surgical team.
Assist surgeons during surgical procedures by passing instruments, supplies, and equipment, anticipating their needs, and providing support to ensure optimal surgical outcomes.
Perform surgical counts of instruments, sponges, and needles before and after procedures, in collaboration with the circulating nurse, to prevent retained surgical items and ensure patient safety.
Monitor and assess patients before, during, and after surgeries, including vital signs, fluid balance, and responses to anesthesia and surgical interventions, and provide appropriate nursing interventions and support as needed.
Document and maintain accurate records of surgical procedures, patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the electronic health record (EHR), ensuring completeness, accuracy, and confidentiality of patient information.
Collaborate with members of the surgical team, including surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical assistants, and perioperative nurses, to ensure efficient and effective coordination of care and communication during surgeries.
Respond promptly and effectively to emergencies and unexpected events in the operating room, such as hemorrhage, cardiac arrest, or equipment failure, following established protocols and prioritizing patient safety.
Provide education and support to patients and their families before and after surgeries, including explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and promoting self-care and recovery.
