Description

  • Prepare the operating room for cardiovascular and thoracic surgical procedures, ensuring all necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies are sterilized, organized, and readily available.
  • Assist cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, holding tissues, and providing other support as needed, anticipating their needs to maintain efficient workflow.
  • Maintain a sterile field throughout surgical procedures, adhering to strict aseptic techniques and infection control protocols to minimize the risk of surgical site infections.
  • Position patients on the operating table and assist with draping and prepping the surgical site, ensuring optimal access for the surgeon while prioritizing patient safety and comfort.
  • Operate and maintain specialized cardiovascular and thoracic surgical equipment and instrumentation, including but not limited to heart-lung machines, bypass circuits, sternal saws, and thoracotomy instruments.
  • Monitor patient vital signs during surgery, including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and cardiac rhythm, and promptly communicate any abnormalities to the surgical team.
  • Assist with the setup and operation of intraoperative imaging and monitoring devices, such as transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and arterial pressure monitoring systems.
  • Assist with transferring patients to the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) or post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) after surgery, providing postoperative care such as wound dressing, chest tube management, and hemodynamic monitoring, and ensuring patient comfort.
  • Collaborate effectively with cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons, perfusionists, cardiac anesthesiologists, nurses, and other members of the surgical team to ensure coordinated patient care and optimal surgical outcomes.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to emergencies during cardiovascular and thoracic surgical procedures, assisting in implementing appropriate interventions to support patient safety and well-being.
