Consultant Emergency Medicine

Clinical Responsibilities

• Provide immediate assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients presenting with medical, surgical, trauma, and cardiac emergencies.
• Ensure rapid stabilization and resuscitation of critically ill patients using evidence-based emergency care protocols.
• Supervise and participate in advanced life support procedures (ACLS, BLS, ATLS) and emergency interventions.
• Coordinate transfer of patients to ICU, OT, or other departments, ensuring safe handover and continuity of care.
• Handle mass casualty situations and disaster emergencies as per hospital disaster management protocols.
• Liaise with specialists across departments (Cardiology, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Critical Care, etc.) for timely consultations.

Operational & Supervisory Responsibilities

• Oversee daily operations of the Emergency Department (ED), including triage, patient throughput, and documentation.
• Supervise medical officers, junior residents, nurses, and paramedics in the ED.
• Ensure adherence to infection control, medication safety, and emergency equipment readiness.
• Participate in developing and implementing hospital-wide emergency response plans and Code Blue protocols.

Administrative & Academic Contributions

• Maintain accurate clinical records, documentation, and medico-legal paperwork.
• Participate in clinical audits, mortality reviews, and quality improvement programs within the department.
• Assist in the development and updating of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for emergency care.
• Conduct and participate in CME sessions, mock drills, and skill training for ED and hospital staff.

Patient & Community Engagement

• Provide empathetic counselling to patients and families during crisis situations.
• Promote emergency preparedness and first-aid awareness programs within the community.
